Preheat and PWHT values shown are typical industry guidance, not a WPS. Actual requirements
depend on wall thickness, carbon equivalent, restraint, ambient conditions, and the governing code
(ASME B31.3, ASME IX, project spec). Always weld to a qualified WPS/PQR with welders qualified for that
procedure — this is especially critical for P91 and other creep-strength-enhanced alloy steels, where an
incorrect preheat/interpass window can cause reheat (Type IV) cracking that isn't visible until years into service.
How the consumable estimate is calculated
Weld groove cross-section area is estimated from a standard single-V butt-weld geometry:
A = (root gap × wall thickness) + (wall thickness² × tan(included angle ÷ 2)), plus a 10%
allowance for cap reinforcement. This area is multiplied by the weld's circumferential length (using the
pipe's mean diameter) to get weld metal volume per joint, then by material density to get weld metal
weight. Because filler metal is deposited less efficiently than the finished weld volume — some is lost to
spatter, stub ends, and arc starts — the weight is divided by the selected process's typical deposition
efficiency to estimate the actual consumable (rod/wire) weight to purchase. This is a planning-stage
estimate for a single-V groove butt weld; actual consumption varies with fit-up, welder technique, joint
design (e.g. compound bevels on thick wall), and repair rate.
