Note on rolled sections: this tool covers plate, bar, tube, hollow section and angle cut to a given size from first-principles geometry. For standard rolled structural sections (I-beams, UB/UC, channels), use the mass-per-metre value from the mill certificate or section property table — rolled shapes include fillets and rounding that a geometric estimate won't capture exactly.

How this is calculated

Weight is calculated from cross-sectional area × length × material density: W = A × L × ρ. For plate, all three dimensions are entered directly and multiplied. For bar, tube, hollow sections and angle, the cross-sectional area is derived from the shape's geometry (e.g. outside area minus inside area for hollow sections) and then extended along the entered length. Hollow section and angle calculations assume square corners rather than the small fillet radius rolled sections actually have, so results run very slightly heavy (typically under 2%) compared to a mill-certified section table — close enough for cutting lists and material estimates, but not a substitute for the mill's stated mass per metre on certified structural material.
